Hotel Derek Earns TripAdvisor GreenLeader Status
With over 300 guestrooms and suites at Houston's Hotel Derek, conserving energy and resources really comes down to our entire team making smart decisions about the little things each day. With the help of our fabulous guests, we are so proud to announce that TripAdvisor has named Hotel Derek a GreenLeader!
What does that mean? It means that we have made it a priority to educate our staff and guests on green practices while implementing hotel wide initiatives like energy efficient lightbulbs, a linen & towel re-use option for guests staying multiple nights, and...we recycle, of course!
About The TripAdvisor GreenLeader Program:
The GreenLeaders Program recognizes hotels and B&Bs that engage in environmentally friendly practices, making it easier for travelers to find and book a greener stay. Qualifying properties are marked with a badge on their TripAdvisor page. This program was developed with help from national and international green industry experts including the US Green Building Council’s LEED Certification Program, the United Nations Environment Program, the US Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR program, and other sustainability experts.

In addition to meeting the green requirements for TripAdvisor's program, Hotel Derek and the entire Destination Hotels & Resorts collection actively work to shrink their carbon footprint through our company wide initiative, "Destination Earth."
About Destination Earth:
All properties in the Destination Hotels & Resorts collection have implemented over 100 environmental initiatives since the inception of the Destination Earth® program in January 2008. The eco-friendly program elements include decreasing energy and water usage, reducing waste, increasing recycling and composting, and purchasing local and organic food and beverages when possible.
Each property has a designated "green team" onsite and has made a commitment to pursuing:
•Sourcing environmentally responsible services and products locally, and purchasing organic, environmentally friendly- and recycled supplies, whenever possible.
•Purchasing fresh and sustainable foods locally grown, whenever possible.
•Creating partnerships with other organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to preserving the environment.
•Leading our associates to apply eco-friendly practices in their daily operations.
•Utilizing environmentally responsible building materials and strategies for new properties and renovations to reduce environmental impact.
•Retrofitting existing properties with energy efficient lighting, heating and cooling systems, as well as water-saving devices.
•Implementing tools that allow us to continually measure the progress of our individual properties and support their commitment to preserving the environment through the Destination Earth® program.
